My favorite model (well, let's face it, she's really my only model) and dear friend Allie came back to town last week, and we managed to get outside one evening for some portrait work. In part we did it just for fun, and in part it was an exercise in lighting for me. I've been keeping up with the Strobist blog and trying to learn to light things with my off-camera hotshoes. These shots were all done with a single Nikon SB-25, off-camera with an umbrella and warming gel, to balance the ambient sunset light. I shot them RAW to better handle the white balance. As far as processing goes, some have very little done to them, and some have quite a bit. Several have Cross Processing applied to them, to mimic the look of old film prints from the 60s and 70s.
I went out with the idea of shooting in this field with her in a dress as a sort of contrast - something a bit out of the ordinary, with a Midwestern flavor to it. She's incredibly easy to work with, and brought several dresses and changed between them behind the car to suite my crazed photographer's whims. Overall I'm very pleased with them, although the lighting needs a bit of fine tuning. There are also a couple of shots where a second flash would have been really useful. But as I'm still using corded flashes, moving around the field with two cords would have been a major pain. That will all change when I get my Pocket Wizards!
