um.. is it okay to use 3 mutually exclusive groups instead of two.. in my mind the three ... components.. look better together.. but instead of di that'll make it a tri and that changes everything.. :S

Then it would be trichotomy. ha ha ha

di·chot·o·my
–noun, plural -mies.
1. division into two parts, kinds, etc.; subdivision into halves or pairs.
2. division into two mutually exclusive, opposed, or contradictory groups: a dichotomy between thought and action.
3. Botany. a mode of branching by constant forking, as in some stems, in veins of leaves, etc.
4. Astronomy. the phase of the moon or of an inferior planet when half of its disk is visible.
[Origin: 1600–10; < Gk dichotomía. See dicho-, -tomy]

so it can be opposites or 2 halves of the same thing that are different?

now I'm confused and understand at the same time...hmmm could be a dichotomy?

not necessarily opposites. but two distinct things/ideas that when put together begin to tell a new story... there is revelation or commentary created by tying these two pieces together.

Heh.. YW. The challenge description isn't too bad I guess. When I think of a dichotomy it usually involves two mutually exclusive points of view, or diametrically opposing mindsets, ways of life, opinions, etc. I believe the word literally means "cut in two".

I used the word dichotomy in a note of advice I wrote over the weekend - I deleted it because I thought that it would probably be confusing. It seems that Langdon does not have same concerns...!

How about

A crossing dressing transvestite standing outside a mens & womans toilet...that would be a Dichotomy!
