I believe it was RainMotorsports that steered me to Paint.net. I've been having fun with it...BUT...
I can seem to figure out how to do the layering and the tutorials and help on the Paint.net site have not helped me.
Can anyone give me a 1...2...3????

Ok, looked it up and saw you had a question about borders earlier so let's see if this helps...
File > Open - Open the file you want to work on.
Image > Resize... - Resize your image to the size you want minus the border you want. For example if you want the longest size to eventually be 640px and you want a 10 pixel border, size the image to 620px. Leave Maintain aspect ratio checked. Click OK.
Layers > Add New Layer - Add a layer. In the layers box move the background image (your image) to the top position by clicking the Move Layer Up arrow icon once.
Image > Canvas Size... - Make sure the radio for By absolute size is selected and in the boxes for each dimension add the amount of each border (In this case 20px). Make sure the Anchor is set to middle. Click OK.
In the layers box make sure the bottom most layer is selected and then use the paint bucket to fill it with any color you wish. This will be the color of your border.
Image > Flatten
File > Save As... - Save as a jpg and you're done.

Did ok up to this point.

When I added a new layer...nothing seemed to happen. A "layers box did not pop up

The one thing you quoted is for doing borders. An by default the layers box is always up. Ill have tot ake a look at it later as far as combining images.
Cut one image the way you need it paste it into a new layer on the other image position it and then flatten together and save.

As RainMotorsports said the layers box is open by default. If it is not you can hit F7 or select Window > Layers to bring it up.
Combining images would involve similar things. Open the first image. Open the second. Now depending on what you're trying to do there are a number of different things you can do. If you want one image on top of the other you create a new layer in the base image and copy the overlaying image into the layer or you could create a new blank image and paste the two of them in there. |

| I haven't used Paint.NET in a long time but i believe for simple operations you dont need to have a separate layer either. Back in Ulead Photoimpact you had objects instead of layers now they have both. As i said its been awhile for me i only use it when im on a computer that has nothing. |

Thank you to both of you for your help. I know I will eventually get it!
