I forgot and left one of mine in the Canon charger last night, so it was going all night. It looks ok, but not sure if it hurt the battery or not. |

considering that canon's directions tell you to leave the battery on the charger after the light indicates a full charge, I would say it isn't a problem. I've left them on overnight too and haven't had any trouble.
I don't think I'd make a habit of it or leave them there for days at a time, but a couple of hours shouldn't hurt. |

It is ok, when the charger knows the bettery is full it stops charging it, at least with as much power. One charger I have, not for canon, is designed to leave the batteries in it, then it put some charge on the battery every now and then, and by doing that the battery is always at high peak performance. |

T.E.
Most chargers nowadays are built so that they shut off automatically and will not harm the battery if left on. One note though, heat is electronics worst enemy. If you leave the charger plugged in all the time I think it could fail sooner than expected.
One other point I would like to make is:
If I try to run the charger on a power strip on top of my desk it will malfunction and will not charge the batteries properly. I think it has to do with a combination of voltage drop and the electronics in the power strip and charger. I had batteries failing just shortly after charging them. I moved the charger to a wall outlet and it worked fine.

Thanks everyone. I remember the old days when the NiCad would go bad if you charged them too much. I normally try to leave the battery on the charger for around an hour after it's done, per the instructions, but last night I totally forgot. |
