I have just installed a Maxtor 500gb external hard drive to my MAC. I formatted the hard drive once connected but think I have done something wrong because now I have 16 icons of hard drives on my desktop - each being an individual partition I think. Is this correct or did I do something wrong? If I am wrong how do I fix this problem?

Are you using Disk Utility to format the drive? It seems you have Volume Scheme set to its highest (16 partitions). Go back to Disk Utility -> Partition, and correct that to how you want it. Re-format, and you're done.
