man that little bugger can tear up some peppers! I like the idea of the web cam but I think you'd have to put a tracking collar on him so the camera can follow. :)
Cindi, what do you do with your peppers? Just normal slice and dice for cooking?
One thing I do with the habaneros (and used to do with Jalapenos too but I like the flavor of habaneros better now) I get is make what my daughter refers to as "Scott Pepper".
I freeze them (till needed) then put them on a food dehydrator till nice and crisp (warning, the smell is awesome but can be a bit overwhelming too lol). Slicing them would make the drying faster but it's just easier not to.
Then I put them in a small grinder/chopper machine and make a fine powder. Another word of caution...DO NOT open the grinder until the dust settles...personal experience, not much fun lol. I put that powder on EVERYTHING, it is awesome on a steak before grilling or even a salad with a bit of ranch dressing, the dressing tones it down just a bit but the flavor still comes through.
I have gotten a lot of co-workers hooked on this stuff over here in Okinawa, and have had to make everyone their own little shakers in case I wasn't around at dinner time lol. Oh last word of caution again from personal experience, don't sprinkle it on a pizza as your pulling it out of the oven...the steam carries it right back up in your face...I don't think I've ever ran to the sink so fast. :D My motto when people use my powder is "When you think you have enough, you already have too much." |

Mmmmm Scott I like your pepper shaker idea! :)
I love peppers of all kinds. I slice them up for salads, use them in tons of recipes, I even pickle a few. I have a bunch in the freezer from last year. Seems I always grow more than I can use in a year. This year I only have a large garden container full this year. I actually like growing them in the pot instead of in the garden - no weeding! :D

Monday Howie Update - He's still eating!
I noticed today that the entire area under the pepper plants is covered with ... uhmmm... castings! They look like little piles of brown cannon balls! lol I'm guessing that's good for the plants, eh?

I see Howard is still a munchin away :) I sure hope you can find him after he goes to metomorphosize into a moth... moth shots would be cool and then you could make a nice panaoramic progression :) hehe |

I've been trying to keep a close eye on him.... I want to find the spot he burrows into when he does that. How long will he stay in ground?

Hmmm.... good question! Apparently they burrow shallowly, so you should be able to find him, but pupation length can vary a lot, depending on day length, temperature etc.
The pupae can enter diapause, which is kind of like hibernation. Up to 95% of Florida's pupae do this if they pupate in mid-August, as opposed to just 5% in June. So the longer he munches, the more likely that he won't reappear until spring! With long days and warm temperature, though, pupation lasts about 18 days.
And if he starts looking like this.....
he's not dead, he's getting ready to pupate :)
eta; Hey, cool! I just found instructions if you wanna keep him and pupate him yourself :D

Jeez. I'm surprised he can eat so many peppers. You'd think his mouth would be burning hot by now. Heh. He's like one big mouth. It would be very interesting to see him transform. I hope he doesn't take too big a toll on your garden though. |

Lol, I figured so too. If I were you, I'd hate to try then have him die and always feel guilty that I'd killed Howard. :)
(btw, his poop is called "flass")

Okay, now I have to ask..... Flass?? Where did that come from? Why is it different from other worms? Normal worm poop is called castings, right? Wow, I need educatin! :D
And yeah, life in a vial doesn't sound very good, so I'll just let Howard live or die by Florida summer weather.

Maybe cuz he's not a worm? ;)
Hell, I dunno, I'm just learning as I go along, reading various sites!
(damn, now I've given away that I'm not an expert... sighhh)
Seriously, I really don't know much about insects, I'm more edumacated about wild plants and the bigger critters. |

I love your macros, you have probably done this before, but what do you use for your macro shots? Hope you dont mind me asking, I only have the 100mm 2.8 Macro for my Canon which doesnt get me anywhere near close enough to get those great shots that you get.
