At last, a glimmer of humanity is being employed to deal with this human rights nightmare.

Supreme Court to hear Guantanamo Bay Appeals

It is despicable that these hundreds of men have been detained without trial for so many years - exactly the kind of behaviour that, when done S Hussein, was used to justify the Iraq war. This is a good example of Orwellian doublethink in operation.

The irony is of course that with all the evidence of their crimes being 5 years old, as time goes on it will become increasingly hard to convict them of the crimes of which they are accused. A few "Not Guilty" verdicts in respect of men held in inhuman (and probably illegal) circumstances will do more for the cause of the fanatics than has been achieved by keeping these men locked up without trial.

Unfortunately, there is no provision to actually release prisoners when their cases are thrown out.

I believe some are children (I thought it was admitted by the brains trust but not sure), so this part is not quite true... Shaking my head is disgust at the hypocrisy :-/

Some are shipped back to a different country then they live and then stuck in prison due to immigration issues... The BBC had some articles on that a while back, so getting out does not equal free.

An article by the BBC that time...found on Google reminds me that kids were held there in 2003.

I remember that some were released at about that time.
