So I've sold my flash and bounce accessories for the Canon, and I'm not planning on buying one for the Nikon (since I don't shoot weddings and I don't normally carry around a flash), I'm wondering if something like this would make the built in flash more usable for those occasions when flash or fill flash would help.
Has anyone tried this? It's not very expensive in any case... but I was wondering.

For pop-up flash I've seen people use a white film canister.
If you know someone who still shoots film this may be something to try. It may not give you the width show in the lumiquest product but you can't beat free. |

That's a good idea--but I'm less worried about the cost than the space in my bag, and so far, if it works, the lumiquest seems to be a good solution there. |

The ping-pong balls actually work very well, and they're nice and small. The bad thing is, they tend to fall off. The really good thing is, you can get people to really watch you and give you good smiles with it - although they might think you're a bit strange.
If you're looking for something really small to use with a flash (not the onboard, but a regular flash), Lumiquest also has a mini softbox (//www.lumiquest.com/lq951.htm) that folds down to almost nothing and works very well. |

The Lumiquest screen should work quite nice when you need to soften the light a little.
Just something to think about if ever decide to get another flash. Nikon recently released the SB-400 which is a nice flash unit and very compact.

| I use the Lumiquest and it does soften the light a reasonable amount using the on-board flash. Easy to carry, too. |
