OK, what am I missing?

Just mounted me Sigma on the little mounting thiny and went to screw it in to my mounting plate. Durned thing appears to be the wrong flipping thread!! Can't find anything in the manual

What the McHeck?

Bizarreness. I had to use a couple of spacers and tension the plate up, and while it does seem fairly secure for now, I'm not really trusting it too much. Yeck.

Mine don't fit either.... :( Might have to get an adaptor of some kind to get it to fit.

Is the hole too big or too small? If it's too big, there's a little inset piece you can screw into it that makes it fit. I don't remember the standard sizes offhand though.

You should be able to find adapters for going both ways (from smaller to larger and vice versa) very cheaply at a good camera store. I had to get one for my monopod and it only cost me about $2.

It's too small if I remember correctly.

Don't know which tripod you have, but my SLIK came with adapter screw thread on it. The larger, outer thread may unscrew to reveal small screw inside??

Oops, maybe I should clarify.

it appears to be the wrong thread or just a bit too small.

I am familiar with the difference between 1/4" and 3/8" threads. I have two adaptors already which I got when I customed out my tripod head with the inverse mount. (see link in my profile if you are curious)

Is there a 5/16" tripod thread? maybe there are some small tripods I can find that have the correct thread... maybe for a cell phone tripod?

What's sigma doing playing around with this crap?

Hrm interesting.

it turns out that it's a 6mm metric thread!

I picked up another Sigma flash unit last night and discovered something VERY unusual. The new unit had a standard 1/4" - 20 thread...

Weird stuff!

Out of 3 flash units, I have one with a normal tripod mount thread and two with non-typical 6mm metric.

I think I will send one back and see if I can get the proper thread as i don't have patience to muck about with this again. I've already purchased a second mounting plate for my light tripod/flash stand, so that's already fine for a permanent mounting plate, but my main tripod is a proper QR system by Velbon. I have no intention of buying a new plate (for about 18 bucks US) just to use with that plastic mounting plate.

Silly Sigma.

So Caveat for all!!! When you buy a Sigma Flash, check the stand/tripod mounting plate (looks like a black plastic "H") with any tripod in the store to make sure it is the right sized thread.

I would imagine that this applies to all Sigma flashes.

Diggin' the flashes though. Very nice! Made a set of 6x8x4 inch softboxes from styrofoam and plain white paper as well that work very nicely and are very light. 2 on stands - 1 left - 1 right and 1 on camera, flash off makes for some really effective lighting that is VERY portable!

I'll have to try this out, thanks!

A little bit larger would be nice, but I just happened to be buying a drink at a stand when someone threw out four identical styro boxes that looked about the right size and shape and even had a rectangular hole cut out in the back.

I had to cut a different hole in the end, but they still work very well. i haven't inlaid them with foil yet or painted them, but I will. Still plenty of light lost through the styro. After the wedding I think.

Not my idea though. I forget whose it is, but it's in the forums here somewhere.

Let me know if they exchange this for the right thread for you. If they do, I'm sending mine back too. Why did they put a 6mm thread on the damned thing? Are there tripods that have a 6mm screw?
