I'm using JAlbum to publish a gallery to the net, for a family to pick which images they want printed. Does anyone know how to:

(1) restrict access to the gallery, so that only the family can view the images in it;

(2) add some sort of copyright feature to the images, so they're not downloadable.

Thanks!

by your 2 points it would seem that you're afraid your family will steal your images! I'm not familiar with that program, wish I could be of some help ...

No, it's not my family.

And yes, if it were my family, I'd be very, very afraid they'd "steal" my images, he, he, you know how families are! [just kidding]

Seriously, yes, I'd rather nobody just downloaded and printed the images, regardless of who they are.

totally agreed ... and yes, I know how families are!! In my world, they'd be the worst offenders thinking they did nothing wrong..

1. Password protect the directory the gallery is in and give the family a username and password. (.htaccess for example)

2. You can only make it a little more cumbersome. JAlbum has filters to add a watermark and you can set it to link only to small versions or build it from only small versions.

Found here.

Question: How can I password protect my albums?

Answer: JAlbum usually produces static html pages. To password protect such pages you need to configure the web server to protect a certain directory for instance. If you host your album on an Apache web server you can put a .htaccess file in the directory to protect.

Question: How can I add watermarks to my photos?

Answer: Watermarks can be added to the generated images by using JAlbum filters. Some skins (BluPlusPlus and ShowOff for instance) also have special fields for entering watermarks in their user interfaces, but you get the best flexibility out of manipulating JAlbum filters right away

Both of these things are possible but not especially related to JAlbum.

The method of restriction depends a little on who you're hosting with. Some hosts make it easy to just stick a password on a folder. Some will allow you to use .htaccess files, etc. If this is a temporary thing (just showing proofs to the family), you might just create a new directory on your site (//ursulaswebsite.com/joebobsphotos/ and direct link them. The likelihood of someone else coming across those is fairly small.

For protecting your images from download, you can add a right-click disable script to your JAlbum template (you can google those, they're everywhere) but as has been discussed about 8 million times here, those doesn't necessarily prohibit download, they just make it more difficult (and more annoying for everyone else). You might consider watermarking your proofs - that's probably the best way to ensure that they aren't stealing and using them.
