Good to hear that they are fixing it under warranty. They should. It's within the warranty period and within rated actuations. |

I am curious to know what the problem actually was with the camera. If they tell you what they had to replace/repair, please let us know. Also, if they give you any indication about how it occured maybe the rest of us could benefit from the knowlege. ( Ex shooting time exposures into the sun with a 10mm lens, thus creating a .05mm spot of 5000 deg F, EV + 450, on the sensor ect)

Hey Waddy! Its the shutter that needed to be replaced - apparently 58,000 actuations was enough to cause a tear. I shoot (or had shot) in locked multi-burst (several minutes at a time) quite a bit last year, guessing that would be the culprit.

I was thinking the same thing. I wouldnt even get it fixed. I would call it my rainbow camera and keep it for that purpose. lol
Cindy, You should go out shoot a bunch of shots that could have rainbows in them. But remeber to change the month on your camera every few shots so you can stock pile for the next 10 or so Free Studies.
You can win 10 in a row and everyone will call you the rainbow warrior. :)
on a serious note, glad you are getting it fixed under warranty.

I'm happy to hear it'll be fixed soon, but think of the opportunities here for putting a rainbow in those shots :-) LEGALLY! We can't "introduce elements" but we can color in existing elements; I see a Free Study entry titled "Over the rainbow" on this one:

Thanks Cindi. I like the look of your new Sanyo gadget. I am glad that this thread has a happy ending although it took some grit on your part to make it turn out that way. : )

My sweet lil camera is home! :D
Service details: "We have examined the product according to your request, and, it was found that the part was inoperative the shutter did not operate properly. The part was replaced. Other electrical adjustments, inspection and cleaning, mechanical adjustments and parts replacement were carried out."
Anyway - the rainbow is gone. :)

Cindi,
I just noticed the same problem you describe on some shots I took with my 30D yesterday. I did some online searching today and found this thread. Here's a sample of what I am seeing:
//www.pbase.com/jhazens/image/82282080
I think it looks pretty similar. I also tried several lenses and apertures. This shot was with the sun to my back and left. My warranty runs out next month so I guess it is good timing but not very comforting that the thing has happened with about 20K frames taken.
I have a some questions regarding sending in to Canon if you have a minute. I have never sent anything back to canon before.
Did you send it back in the original canon box? I was thinking of putting it in the original box and putting that inside a second box with bubble wrap.
How did you send it? USPS, Fedex, etc.? and did you inxure it?
Thanks for any response,
Jeff

Jeff, your pbase link doesn't work. I'm curious about this thread since I also own a 30D. |

Cannon told me don't send it in the original box because when it gets sent back it comes from a different department and they will use their own box.
I sent mine next day Fedex which ws a monumental waste of money as, even though it was signed for the next morning, Cnon's ticketing system didn't mark it as received by the repair department for 3 or 4 days.
Insure it, certainly. |

Hey Jeff. I sent it UPS, not in the original box. I let the UPS guy package it, but I watched the whole time and made sure it looked REALLY secure. If you call Canon they will tell you where to send it and let you know what you need to send with it - warranty card, etc. Definitely insure it. You can track the repair online through Canons site so you know when its on its way back to you. It will be returned via FedEx Overnight and you MUST have someone on hand to sign for delivery.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the quick responses. I updated the link in my earlier post....hopefully it works now. I did the preview thing first time around and it worked fine ???? Let me know if it still doesn't work. I hate being the rookie.
I will probably send UPS and hopefully get it back before a vacation I have planned starting Aug 15.
Thanks again for the tips. |

FYI.....I figured I would post an update on my camera for any that were following this thread.
I sent my 30D to Canon (Irvine) on July 18 (Since I was going to be without the camera, I decided to also send in my 24-105 f4L for calibration since it seemed to be backfocusing a little).
It was received by Canon on the 20th and I got the emails for each item saying the service was accepted and under warranty. The email did not say what the diagnosed problem was.
I got another set of emails yesterday evening saying the service was complete and the items were shipped.
Tracking says I should get them tomorrow which will be the two week mark from when I sent them in. Pretty good turn-around I must say.
Hopefully everything will be in working order.
How has your repaired camera been doing Cindi?

You flip your camera over so the shutter button's on the bottom?

I'm glad I kept pushing them. Like you, Robert, I'd guess most people just pay it. |
Did you record a feature length motion picture with it? |

Yep, unless I'm using the battery grip which I typically have on the camera when not using a tripod. For some reason when using a tripod, it just feels more natural with the shutter on the bottom rather than reaching over the top. "shrug" |

Besides, when you do it this way, and don't tighten the tripod screw enough, the the lens tips the camera down and tightens it on the screw. If you put the shutter button on top, if the lens tips the camera down, the tripod screw gets looser. |

Hey, Jeff! Glad your camera is repaired and on its way home. Mine has been working like a champ. I'm still LOVING how clean it is, not a speck of anything anywhere! :)
