I was wondering I just bought my Pentax k10d and I thought from everything that I read that you can even attach older lenses and be able to use them in manual mode.

I tried to use my Pentax 50mm 1.4 which is an older manual lens. I get an F message on the digital box to the right.

I am trying to make heads and tails out of it but it wont let me take a picture. I am having a bit more trouble because I am translating the manual from korean into english so that I can understand it. I bought it here in korea.

If anyone knows something I would be very helpful to learn about it just email please.

If the shake reduction is on you have to input the Focal Length of the lens. Also might help to put the AF mode into Manual.

I know with M42 lenses (NOT THE CASE) you pretty much stick yourself down to manual or AV mode. Which case you have to set a setting for the Aperture in the system menu.

I know on my DS that I had to go into the custom menu and set the "Using aperture ring" to 2 (permitted). Then when you set the camera in M mode and press the AE-L button, the camera will set the correct shutter speed for the aperture set on your lens. You will also have to set the camera to manual focus.

If this doesn't work for you K10D, do a search on the pentax forum at www.dpreview.com

atupdate is on the right path. If the lens is an M lens (not an A lens), then you'll need to go into the K10D's custom set-up and look for the option that allows use of the aperature ring. Make sure that option is set so you can use the aperature ring.

Put the camera in Manual mode. Attach the lens, set your desired aperature on the aperature ring, compose your shot, and press the Green button on the top of the camera near the shutter-release to stop down the lens and meter the scene.

I find that the K10D over-exposes slightly with most older lenses (and so do most people). A quick and easy fix for this is to just use your dial to dial up the shutter-speed a couple of stops (if it meters at, say, 1/125 of a sec, dial it up to 1/250 or 1/300 or whatever). Just experiment with this a little and you'll find settings that work for you.

Hope this helps.

Av mode won't work with lenses that aren't A-lenses or later. You MUST be in Manual mode for M and M42 lenses. The AF mode doesn't really matter, as older lenses don't have AF, and having AF on won't stop you from manually focusing.

This may also help, a link to the Pentax USA site with downloadable manuals.
