I was browsing the duty free shop in Dubrovnik airport (Croatia) yesterday and saw a brand new Canon PowerShot S20, all 3.3 megapixels.

The price?

€899

Although, it did look like the cabinet hadn't been opened in about 5 years.

Probably a mistake...that camera was released in 2000! So I guess 5 years sounds about right. But jeez...a 3.3mp camera was $899 back then?? I love technology

I paid IR£1,100 (about US$2,000 at today's exchange rates) for my 3.3mp Coolpix 990 back in 2000.... Only 7 years ago and look what I'd get for US$2,000 now!

Yeah! A camera that, in 7 years, will be worth about $50. :)

Laptops, digital cameras, camcorders, mp3 players, cell phones. Gotta love depreciation. The advance of technology / built-in obsolescence gives any gadget a lifetime of about 5 years max.

Remember the last of the film SLR cameras, how much metal they had in the body? Cameras like the FM2 were built to last. You could get 50 years out of a camera like that and then another 50 years once you'd serviced the shutter. As soon as 'digital' came along suddenly the manufacturers reverted to unserviceable plastic components. Basically the thing will break if the technology doesn't overtake you first.

Hang on... I think I've had this rant before.... :)

It's a good rant to hear again though.

WHat you have to love is the Electronics market in Croatia, atleast its slightly better then Bosnia and Serbia. ALot of bootlegs and knock offs though. I write a website for a programmer over there.
