This was the third year I have submitted entries to the Photographic Exhibition and every year it gets tougher. This year they said they had over 4000 entries and about 1500 were selected- about one in three. Of the six I sent in, two were accepted and I received two Honorable Mention ribbons. The quality of entries was unbelievable- it was like walking through a National Geographic/ Life Magazine exhibit. I was honored to be in such company and fortunate to get the ribbons I did. Many very deserving photos did not receive any. The selection must have been very difficult!
"The Night Stand" received an HM in the "Still Life" category
"Waiting" (or "Downtown Trolley") received on in BW Architecture/ Cityscape category
and "Missed Opportunity" was exhibited in the Color Sports category.
Digital technology is allowing amateurs like myself to get closer to professional results. Without digital, there is not way I would be at this level today.
If you are intrested, I have my other submissions and some shots from the fair in my gallery: //www.pbase.com/jeffryz/county_fair

Congrats Jeffry !
I keep telling myself I'm going to enter someday, but in the 20+ years I've lived here and been to the Del Mar Fair, (still can't call it the San Diego County Fair - kind of like the Jack Murphy / Qualcomm Stadium thing) I have yet to enter.
Maybe someday.
Gotta' be a great feeling to get that many even accepted into it - w00t!

Exactly true. In 6 months I've shot 3000 frames, and learned a tremendous amount. Call colors prints $0.50 a shot, and I've saved something like $1000 over doing the same with film... But more to the point, I've DONE it, which I wouldn't have - couldn't have - on film.
Combine this with EXIF data (so I can see what does what, in near real time, without having to carry a little notebook with me everywhere) and it makes a huge difference.
I've even made a picture or two that didn't suck.
Congrats on your shots! They're great and deserve the recognition. |

Thanks for the comments and the link for the SD DSLR group. My work schedule bounces all over the place which makes joining a group like that difficult but makes photography a great hobby to have- I can be out when there are fewer other people around.
I still want to call it the Del Mar Fair too. Sounds nicer than just the "San Diego County Fair", or maybe I am just more used to it being called that. Guess they wanted a more country- type image. Entry fees for the main competition was $16 an image this year. [/url] |

Congratulations Jeffry! I can see the light of the fair from my bedroom window at night, but I rarely go there, mainly because it's hot, crowded, dirty and expensive. If I do get there I'll definitely check out the photography exhibit and see your shots. Thanks, whoever gave the link for the SDDSLR site, but it all seems a bit out of date. Everything they say is upcoming has already passed. Hopefully they'll announce upcoming events in plenty of time to attend them. It looks like there are several San Diego DPCers. |
