The same is true for Windows. I have never run anti-virus on any of my well-used, always-online Windows machines at home and have never had a problem in about thirteen or so years of Internet use. The truth is, if you're careful about the sites you surf, the software you download, and the e-mail attachments you (don't) open, in other words, if you're a marginally vigilant computer user, you are perfectly safe. |

| Information aboutrenepo, and old script-based worm from 2004 that could hack OSX boxes. OSX's FreeBSD-based core, including shells and various command-line tools that are pretty potent, are potential targets for hackers, as Unix has generally been from time immemorial. One assumes that renepo has long since stopped being a general threat, but there's no doubt that there are no guarantees that OSX will be impenetrable for all time. |

140,000+ known viruses or worms on Windows. Zero in the wild for Mac OS X.
Do you REALLY think it's only the market share keeping the hackers at bay?
Please. |
Market share in computers is hardly the point. Market share in operating systems is the statistic to post and I can sum it up for you - # of sales of osX is a pimple on the ass of the behemoth that is M$.
edit: to the OP - osX claims no viruses because every time a virus comes out for osX they reclassify it as a 'trojan'. Splitting hairs is fine when it isn't your machine going apeshit. Do the rest of the net a favor and buy the a/v.

Or to Versiontracker. I trust this site, better than a "i haven't tried the software, but like it-so download it" website. :)
All about where ya go and what you do.

actually there are. but the approach Apple takes, discourages people from reporting vulnerabilities to Apple. There has been cases where Apple sued ethical hackers who found security flaws with the os. i foresee the iPhone to be the next big target for hackers due to the nature of the device - storing lots of personal data, and vulnerable because it is in its infancy. |
