Was told about this some time back and have just decided to try it myself and thought I would share with others in case you find it of use.

I don't know what you would really call it but I'll just name it the 'Steady Lead'.

Purchase a screw that fits into your tripod screw mount (whitworth thread I believe). Attach a lead/cord/ to it that is longer than the distance from your eye to the ground and attach it to the screw.

When you need a steady hand simply screw the 'steady lead' into your camera, stand on the lead and bring camera to your eye (obviously adjust length of lead to be suitable) then stand firm and pull against the lead to create a steady hold. If kneeling place under knee, etc etc.
