Today my 70-210 lens decided to start throwing Err 99 at me. At least, I hope it's the lens. I've gone through all of the cleaning and troubleshooting to no avail.

It errors out (audibly) when the lens is zoomed over ~120mm in bright light. I can't get any of my other lenses to throw the error, but they're all short. Between 18-55.

Tomorrow I'm taking the body to the local pro photo place where I'm going to buy my new lens (28-135 IS) and try out a couple longer-focal length lenses to see if I can reproduce the problem on anything other than my lens. I hope I can't. I hope it's just the lens.

I find thats an interesting lens size i just got a used 70-210 Sigma for Pentax K mount.

I wonder what fueled the whole 210 thing.

70x3=210... Common wisdom says "3X zoom is max you can do without quality issues".

(most likely) it is the lens
and the problem is in the lens F stops electric circuit
try using the lens in av mood and make sure that the F stop is as open as possible f2.8 or f3.5. the lens should work fine.
now try to take the same shot with closing the f stop to f4 or f5.6 and the camera will give the error 99
if thats the case the lens needs fixing.

Pro Photo guy validated what I (and Oded) had already assumed. The aperture is bad on that lens - it's sticking randomly. I'm not sure whether it's electronic or mechanical, but for now the lens is officially pulled from my bag.

It's probably not worth having repaired.
