I believe that there could have been a much better idea for a challenge than "A Tacky Holiday Decoration." Would you rather see a photo of a tacky dumb plastic decoration or a photo that shows the beauty and spender of winter? Maybe a challenge like "Holiday Cheer," or "Whimsical Winter," or even something like "Winter Celebration." I think that using the adjective "tacky" narrows down the creative flow too much. It would have been better to just be "Holiday Decoration." Yes, I know I'm just easily criticizing the higher-ups of DPC, but I think it would be nice to have a little broader topics, to open up more creativity. It is a careful balance, not to broad (like posting a picture of dishwasher for a decoration photo), but enough to allow for more Out-of-Box photos. I don't know if anyone stands with me on this, maybe its just some daft idea of mine; but it seem that too many photos are being too heavily judged upon how relative they are to the challenge definition than the creative aspects and originality of the photo.

I agree with you. Although you have to keep in mind that this site is Challenge based and that we have to think of that when voting. I looked over the entries in this challenge and the first thing that came to my mind was ... challenge full of snapshottish pictures. There are some good ones in terms of quality, but many are not.

Ya know, I just don't feel like EVERY challenge has to be "hardcore" photography based on technical perfection. Sometimes we just wanna have fun. I didn't enter this challenge, but did have a fun time voting on it. I agree that all the photos were not top notch quality, but SO WHAT? The biggest part of this challenge had to be finding something tacky enough, and then getting up the nerve to sneak up on someone's tacky display and shoot it!

creative shots might be encouraged but it is shot down by voters. This is quite evident in the last open challenge, on the edge. So by the admins & SC counsel are just making it easier for us.

Problem is - there have already been some great open challenges - this just happens to be a slightly silly seasonal one. It is a painful voting process though (particularly as many voters don't seem to appreciate the technical brilliance of my shot and a probably distracted by the sheer ugliness of the subject!) :D

I just finished voting on the challenge. I chose not to enter it cause what is tacky to one may not be tacky to another. I will admit after voting that there were a few tasteless decorations that actually crossed the fine line from just being tasteless to being out and out tacky too. The one disappointment in the challenge was the fact that there were just way to many out of focus photos this time around.

Yep, it would appear this challenge is being voted very strongly either/or- technical or challenge fit. That being the case I wish the people who are giving low votes would comment on WHY. It would be really nice to know if I'm getting low scores because you don't like the subject, you don't think it's tacky, or you don't think it's technically well shot. It seems to be a bigger issue in this challenge than in others.

This is very good insite posted. Thank you...
I just think that people need to keep in mind that what thier idea of the challenge was may not be everyone else's. It just might be this challenge, but many creative photos have been shot down for that same reason. Next time, I'll go more carefree and have a little more fun, maybe less originality (well at least to the point were it makes it under people's firing squads), and just see what happens.
