Would somebody please help me with some information (rules) for timing of the challenges? I just returned with my tacky Christmas decoration photos and have a little over 2 hours more of December 30th here in California. When I submitted photoĂ¢€™s to the America 24/7 project they used the EXIF information to determine the Ă¢€˜timingĂ¢€™.
Thanks
Tim

All of the challenges and the servers are on Eastern time ... there has to be one single instant when the challenge starts/ends, which is Midnight EST. We will indeed make an allowance for your local time in determining whether the challenge is taken within the allowable period.

For example, I'm in California, so challenges end at 9 pm PST for me.

The current DPC Server time is located in the small type at the bottom of every single page.

It is apparent to me now that the server time is 2 hours ahead of my location. Is it the 'server time' that is used to start and stop the challenges? If I were so lucky as to have the EXIF information requested for a winning shot is my timing going to 'synch' properly? It looks as though there are people from around the world in the community... to that end, has the topic of using EXIF time been considered. Thanks Tim

Paul, Thanks for the reply. I typoed on the "2" should have been 3. So if your "...Long Drive Home" photo had been taken just shy of 3 hours before the challenge started back East, it would have been OK to submit within the rules. I think I much prefer the way America 24/7 used the EXIF timing, although 2 seconds past midnight kept me from being able to submit the best shot I took in the whole week!

For the 24/7 project I think they wanted everyone to shoot on that calendar day during their local time. Since DPC is a worldwide contest, and there's a deadline for submissions, everything has to synch to some arbitrary time zone ... the site owners chosen to use the one where they live, so at least THEY have a chance to not be confused.

If I take a picture right now, my EXIF will still show it as taken on 12/30, while by server time it is 12/31 -- I could legally enter it in a challenge which started tonight, but only if it showed it was taken after 9 pm.

Paul,
Thanks! That means that since I took the picture today before Midnight eastern Time... I should be able to submit it...which I still want to do. How can I do that? Please help as I'm ready to upload it if possible ... EXIF info = 12/30/2003 5:20:24 PM... California time...

The photo may be legal for date, but the challenge submission deadline was 9 pm PST, and no more entries are being accepted ... sorry for the confusion!

There is a thread started on the decorations topic to which at least one other non-submitter has posted a photo for comments; you could add yours there. Check in the Tutorials under the Learn menu for guidelines on linking your photo (thumbnail) to the forums.

Paul,
Thanks again... I guess that means we can start shooting 3 hours early but have 3 less hours on the end of the challenge to shoot/process & submit? Is it the same for the other 'quick' challenges? I did look at the site with the 'Flowers in the Bowl" yes that was a pity that they didn't get that posted! Very Tacky! I'll take a look at the tutorials & give a try at posting my "Starfish Santa".
