Or maybe the question should be, "If I'm requested to send an original in as proof with the steps I took to arrive at the challenge entry, do I have to have the exact numbers, i.e. brightness 20, contrast 10, red 42, etc.?"

I ask because honestly I never write the stuff down and unless it's being kept track of somewhere else I wouldn't know how I arrived at some of the shots I did. Should I start keeping a notebook? I have a large extra one just sitting here........

Per some earlier discussion the conclusion seems to be that you don't need the specific numbers, only the general steps. If the path from original ot final image was complicated, I would certainly keep the notes.
Photoshop CS does have a feature to save a log of the steps taken, BTW.

I write all my steps down and also type those into the description box. This will also help me if for some reason my computer crashes midway trough the editing.

I also convert the jpeg to a psd file and occasionaly take a snapshot.

Also, if you use adjustment layers, you can go back and open up the layer and write down the numbers, or take a screen-shot.

I always keep my PSD with all the layers, just in case.

Actually if your steps are not too complicated you can record an action and save it (at least in regular Photoshop you can). I am not sure about Photoshop Elements though.

PS 7 also has a history bar that logs as you are making changes what you have done. But this isnt daved or anything. If you make eidts all at once, you can jot down the history after you are done.

I try to summarize what I did in the file name when I "save as". For example, if I took photo PC121234.jpg, cropped it, performed auto color correction, manually adjusted levels, used unsharp mask, and despeckled, I name my new file PC121234CaccLusmDesp.jpg.

That might be confusing to the casual observer, but it reminds me what I went through to get to the new result. I would recommend setting up a system like that, but it needs to make sense to you.
