So the first wedding is done now... I'm interested to know how the rest of you faired... I'm just uploading the photo's to my site now, and I would have to say after all the worry, it all went off pretty well without a hitch. it was a pretty low key wedding but the bride and grrom where great and with the exception of the maid of honour (who seemed to think she new more then everyone about everything... which was really annoying during the formals) the rest of the wedding were too... I prett please with the pictures that I cam out with too (which I'll post once I've edited some later tonight.

what about the rest of you... did you surviv the ordeal?

Im tempted to response to some of those craigslist ads I see or proposition some of the studios around my house, to see if they need a 2nd shooter/assistant on some weddings, just so I can get the feel for it and get a general idea (as well as having something to put in a portfolio to book my own gigs)

Good and bad.

I got great shots while bride and groom were getting ready. But when I left the freezing hotel room to the humid beach to get some shots of the rings on the sand dunes with some sea oats, I had to change lenses. Big mistake!!!!! My lenses and the INSIDE OF MY CAMERA fogged up immediately. 15 MINUTES BEFORE THE WEDDING!!!!

I had to go back inside, put the equipment in front of the air conditioner vent momentarily to remove the humidity and put the lenses that I wanted to use outside on the two cameras while in the low humidity indoors. Once outside, I had to constantly wipe the front of the lenses with a microfiber cloth to remove the condensation.

A very powerful thunderstorm with wind gusts to 50 mph destroyed the after wedding photos ops about 15 minutes after the wedding ended. The wedding was on the beach and the only decent backdrop was the beach and the water for the short time before the torrential downpour started. This left me with black, overcast skies and a bright band on the horizon level behind the heads of the wedding party. Without fill flash I wouldn't have gotten any detail. As it turns out it is impossible to obtain anything close to balanced exposure between the blown out background and the subject's faces.

The wind blew the tents and canopies off the bluff and onto the beach. People had to sprint away from their poses to retrieve everything before it all started to float away. The wedding cake ended up sandblasted and many of the guests were soaked. We had to let some of the guests borrow a change of clothes.

Eventually, the hotel staff let us retreat to a banquet hall that was previously unavailable due to another party. This party ened as the storm hit so that room became available, but not yet cleaned up. We made the best of it and most importantly, my brother and especially his bride, took it all very well and considered it a great day.

I've got a lot of post processing to do and I'll get some pics posted sometime.

I would think that's a great idea, and it'll definatly take some of the pressure off your first solo gig if you've shot something similar before

I think so too, I mean most places will pay you as well, and its free on the job training. I just gotta be careful about signging anything - noncompete clauses and such.
