I know there are LOADS of threads about lens and which to buy, but I have a very specific question about what lenses I should get to fill in my collection.
I currently have a D70. And I own the following lenses:
Nikkor 50mm/1.8
Nikkor 105mm/2.8
Nikkor 35-80mm/3.5-5.6
Nikkor 70-300mm/3.5-5.6
Here is my quandry - what lens should I get to fill this collection in. I want something wider than what I have. I would like to get a nikkor lens, but I can't afford the 17-55/2.8 I have been coveting. I was thinking of getting the tokina 12-24/F4, but have currently been eyeing the 18-200/3.5-5.6 as well. I need something wider because I'm going to Nova Scotia and would like to capture some of this beautiful provinces gorgeous landscapes, and I also want a lens that can do more than just one thing for me. I also am thinking of selling my 35-80 if I get something that covers that range.
Any thoughts on what lens I should get? (including something I haven't considered yet). My budget is $600 cdn.
Thanks for your expertise, guys! |

I'd think the 12-24 would be a good fit. The 35-80 you have now sounds like a nice walkaround lens. I think you'd be disappointed with the 18-200 at the wide end as it's not going to be as wide as you think. JMO of course. I know nothing about the technicals on the items in your list. :) |

The Tokina 12-24mm is awesome - maybe a little higher than your budget but it is rock solid and is really good for landscapes. I have the 18-200VR as well and like it well enough for most everyday stuff, but for the wide stuff, I always use the 12-24. |

You're missing a wide angle. The Tokina AF 12-24mm f/4.0 AT-X 124AF Pro DX is great (this one)
I just got the Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR II (the perfect walkaround lens)
Bummer - and I posted this before reading your whole post :)

I am a little bit biased since I do have the tokina 12-24mm. It's a great lens for landscapes.
I sold 18-200mm VR because I wasn't happy with it. I got a lot of money from that.

I took my 18-200vr back to the store and traded it for a 80-200 2.8 The autofocus was bad on the vr lens, didnt want to wait another 6-8 weeks for a replacement and the store didn't want to lose the sale completely so they gave me a more than fair trade.

I vote for the wide angle, too. Love my Tokina 12-24.

thanks for all the suggestions, everyone.
I think the Tokina is the one I should get, but wanted to see what people thought of the 18-200 if anyone had it. I have read reviews that its a perfect walkabout lens, but its also something I can pick up later as its not really as wide as it seems (someone mentioned this).
I am looking at getting the Tokina used off ebay, maybe. if anyone has any leads, I'm all ears. |

NS is nice but not as nice as BC. don't know how long you'll be here or where you are planning on visiting but the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton is a must. Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg, and Cape Split in the Valley are all good too |

You would certainly love the 12-24... it's an amazing lens...
These shots wouldn't have happened if I didn't have it...

thanks for the lens suggestions, and examples, guys. You are amazingly helpful!
Also glad to know of a few places to visit. I might not have time for the Cabot Trail, but the rest I think we can manage. We're only there for 6 days and have a lot of family to visit as well.
Someone else has a thread they are seeking help in on this same issue..funny how we all end up thinking the same thing sometimes! |
