Hello,
How can a 50mm fixed focal lenghth lens like the canon 50mm f/1.4 USm be a telephoto lens ?
Then what is the difference between this lens' telephoto capability and the 200mm or 300mm lenses'
Thanks

urm - i think you might be confusing whst telephoto means - that or not understand what focal length is. Have a look at this to see what happens when you change focal length:

A 50mm lens is normally though of as a "Standard" focal length lens. have a look at Canon USA; notice that they are grouped together with medium telephoto lenses, but referred to in the title as "standard."
When we consider APS-C format (1.6-crop) cameras, the 50mm lenses actually have a field of view of an 80mm lens, and thus actually do act something like a moderate telephoto lens. |

That's it. And if a 50mm lens were on a medium format camera it would be considered a wide angle lens.

A "normal" lens for a given film/sensor format is a lens with a focal length roughly equal to the diagonal of the sensor/film.
For an APS-C camera, it's something like 32mm. For 35mm film it's about 44mm. For 6x6 it's 84mm. For 6x7, it's 92mm, and for 4x5 it's about 170mm and so on. |

50mm is a \'Normal\' lens on a film camera.
However, with the crop factor on a lot of DSLRs this lens becomes a telephoto lens of ~85mm.
Telephoto is a term for focal lengths greater than 50mm. |

No, telephoto is a term for lenses with focal lengths greater than what's "normal" for a given format.
e.g. A 90mm lens is a wide angle lens on a 4x5 camera. |

You are correct. I was using 35mm film as the reference.

If the OP was sort of confused when they came in here. They are going to be totally confused now with all this extra info about medium formats etc... lol
I think Kirbic probably answered the question, As I believe the question stems from how they have the lenses listed on a website.
Ok back to you guys.
