I hit the streets for the candid challenge and found myself in a bind. I don't know the first thing about proper etiquette while shooting strangers on city/town streets. It wasn't crowded or busy so it would be obvious to anyone around me that I was photographing someone specific. I just didn't know how to approach people. There are some great street photographers on this site and even though I didn't get a good shot to submit, I'd like to get some advice on how or what to say to people; or if i should say anything at all. Thanks!

Nikkor 600mm ;)

On a more serious note i think you need to be in the right frame of mind and have a bit of brazenness/boldness about you to do it. My only "street" photography was me sat with my camera on my knees and randomly clicking the shutter, even then i was afraid someone would confront me and i was in a crowded street:

ETA: in terms of what to say i think the truth is the best way, and also for candid that might involve speaking to them afterwards and maybe showing them the shot to quell any fears they might have. But this is from someone who has never done it - only thinking out loud.

Just walk around like you looking for something to photograph. Stand, look around, take you time. People will look at you (because you have big ass camera) and then go to whatever they were doing. Then you try to get a photo of them. If they notice you just smile.

I always go to places where people have cameras so I blend a bit or monuments that people expect people to take photos of but stand back a bit an focus on the stuff in between me and the monument

It's also sometimes as fun to pick your background - buildings, crappy looking alley, what have you - and then just camping out waiting for people to come along and fill in the scene.

As for the rest, just shoot and don't worry about it. If someone has a problem with it, stop. If they are big, run.

I find it really hard too, I went down to London last weekend with the sole purpose of photographing people, I went to a crowded touristy place and was quite brazen about it!! The biggest thing though that helped was to find a viewpoint higher up and then photograph looking down...this was so much easier...nobody noticed noticed me:)
