Are there any rules against putting a photo in your portfolio and it getting comments before entering it into a challenge? I have a photo I really wanted to use for my free study so I didn't put it in my portfolio but I put in a different picture which I am not considering doing the free study with but I was curious to know if there are rules against that. I couldn't find any but I figured I would ask to make sure I didn't miss anything, thanks!

There's not a hard and fast rule against it, but many people have voted images lower if they've seen them in the forums or portfolios.

At the begginning of the year there is usually a "Best of 20xx" for images from the previous year that were not entered in challenges. Many of those were in portfolios. Voters are a little more forgiving in that case.

If you do enter an image from your portfolio be sure to remove it while the challenge is going on. I think that is against the rules.

I reccommend that you do not post an image in your portfolio or in a forum before and during the challenge.

Your best option is to put a picture for which you want pre-challenge comments in your Workshop folder. That way, people who are casually browsing your portfolio won't see it, but you can refer specific people to it for their opinion.

Many people who have seen a photo before the challenge will not vote on it out of consideration of possible voter bias, which is against the rules. Check out some of the recent threads on "friend voting" for a more detailed discussion of this issue.

Do note that putting a shot in your portfolio and asking for public comments on it before entering will result in uproar, low votes, and voodoo dolls with your name on the underwear. Asking one or two people for a private opinion is fine though (and probably common).
