I think it would be nice if each image on the site had a way to track when they are referenced, so you can see where a given image is talked about.

I would imagine that would be quite hard to implement.

On a relation SQL database not necessarily. It does depend on 1 of 2 things in the design. Chances are it would be on here. Wikimedia/Wikipedia has done this but not entirely implemented.

However A single image might have 10 20 even 50 references.... not really clean.

I don't think so; especially if the threads are stored on dpc with the BBCode (or whatever it's called). It'd be quite easy to pick out "thumb" and "user" tags, and build a searchable index out of them.

Yes, but there's all kinds of context that a DPC search could use. For example, a thumbnail link on a post is more relevant than that post quoted inside another post. The "first" post of a thread is another likely to be very relevant link.

That method would eat a lot of processor time. But after its done you can then anytime a post is created check and add to it.

But how would you take care of images deleted from a post?

A real time search would be inefficient and slow the site down.

A real time search through every post would be crazy, *but* it is possible to keep hourly updates, for example. I don't think anyone is asking to be notified the moment their image is discussed. If the searchable database is implemented correctly, the hourly updates could be merged into the main db. Searching an optimized index is work, granted, but for a dataset this small it shouldn't be too big a deal. If it is, the admins could disable the feature. Checking for a post that's editted to remove an image is also easily done; each "edit" goes through DPC's thread maintenance process anyway; a hook could be added to have an update in the db.

Disclaimer: I worked on Inktomi's search engine for a few years (and also Yahoo's, after Yahoo bought Inktomi) doing this kind of thing.

Heh i couldnt write a search engine to save my life.

My current project is a Vin decoder/parts cross reference application and im already having issues on manual searches!

If you simply used tagging and trackbacks, wouldn't that be a lot more organic that forcing all that sludge through SQL?

In any case, do you guys think it's a decent idea?

It would certainly be a nice feature to use.

I agree; it would be useful to see where I'm mentioned. The current site searching (internally, or through Yahoo or Google) does not distinguish between being mentioned in a post or posting myself.

If someone was using one of my pictures in a thread, I think it would be nice to know about it. It's really not much different than printing a photo from someone's portfolio and tacking it to a concrete wall for everyone to see..

Other than the fact that clicking on the thumbnail takes you back to the picture and you can see clearly who took the photo..

Still, I would definitely like to know when people are talking about my pictures..

As if they would.. But you get the point.

I like it.

I'd also like it if I could have a queue made from AJAX that would allow me to batch edit my portfolio, post them to a thread, or other options, delete, move to or make new folder.

I still think the site design is due for an upgrade to "web2.0" style. That was just me the last time around.

Dunno about this idea but I just checked out the IMDB link and um... you're kinda HOT!
