I'm noticing that adjusting curves on a color image seems to boost saturation. I'm trying to control that, as I've already added a hue/saturation layer to my image.

1. Does the ordering of the layers matter? I have the background image, then HSL, then Levels, then Curves on top.
2. Should I adjust curves first, and then fine tune saturation in the HSL layer?
3. What is your own approach to dealing with this?

I realize every image is different, but I'm just looking for some general approaches that will be good in most scenarios. Thanks for any help at all.

Always save saturation adjustments until the end of the queue, yep. Curves (or levels) has a distinct effect on saturation.

Try changing the layer mode of the Curves layer to Luminosity.

The layer order absolutely affects the end result because each layer acts on the image as if all of the lower layers had been applied. Just move a couple of layers around and you'll see differences.

And thanks, xion, for that tip! I've always had problems using large curves in color shots because it so affects the colors, not just the brightness. Using a different blending mode is great!

Just remember that for basic editing challenges, everything has to be set to a blending mode of normal.
