I have been internetized. When I crop my photos I crop them so they look nice as a .jpg. My problem is that I am getting some prints made, and I know that the picture frames/matte is going to cut into the photos a bit. Is there an amount that is wise to put a border around an 8x10 photo so that it helps with this. I just don't know how thick to make it so that the border doesn't show, yet it is not interfering with how the photo should look.

In the future I will leave some "bleed" room for this, but for all my old prints, I am sort of stuck I am guessing.

Probably 1/8 to 1/4-inch white border would work -- the way old-fashioned photolab prints were made. Personally, I usually put a real border and caption on mine, since I expect the buyer to make a custom mat anyway if they decide to frame it. My images are rarely cropped to the exact aspect ratio of a standard print anyway.

Check out the table at the bottom of this article on using printer profiles to see exactly how big to make your images to allow for the bleed/trim area if you want to make borderless prints in the future.
