After the Oregon GTG I stopped at Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument to take a hike or two and stay the night. One of these days we should make this a GTG as it has great hiking, lots of shooting opportunities and nearby camping and cabins.

I was there just as the wildflowers were beginning to bloom and it looks like it would be spectacular around the end of June or so. A few more years of seeding themselves and it may just become better than Mt. Rainier for wildflowers. I had hoped for thunderstorms that evening but they never materialized. Mid day was very hot, dry and windy so the photography was limited. At times the dust clouds obscured the crater. Later in the day gave me better opportunities for shots as the clouds began to move in with the day finishing with the crater clouded over.

Here are a few of the shots I took including some self portraits on the trail:

Finally getting back to my Mt. St. Helens shots and put together this pano of six shots. These were taken from about four (4) miles north of the crater dome and Spirit Lake is on the left. You can see that the dome is smoking, as it almost always is. Unfortunately you can also see that the entire area to the west has the sky blown out. When I go back I will assure I do multiple shots of each scene and bracket them.

Nice shots. That's not dust obscuring the crater, that's steam from the still building lava dome. If it keeps up, one of these days it's going to heal itself and fill in the crater and put some more height on. That's assuming it keeps pumping the lava out. Hopefully it will continue to stay nice and docile though and not blow again anytime in the next few hundred years since I do live within site of it.

Yeah, it was steaming that day quite a bit. But in some of the shots later in the day the wind came up and there was quite a bit of dust blowing accross the crater opening as well.

Next time down I'll have to contact you for the good places to hike to for pictures. I only did the Boundary Trail from Johnston Ridge to Truman Trail.
