Hi

Can I use extension tubes for macro photography with a 55-200 nikon VR lens I have? or would it be better to use a 18-55mm, which would get closer with the extension tubes?

I have the Kenko set and use them with all my lenses.

With the Wide Angle lens you are limited as to which ones to use as the camera to subject distance gets very short, very fast.

Using the 25mm tube on my 17-40 lens means I have to be within 1mm or so of the subject.

Example with 12mm tube:

Using them with a zoom lens will shorten the working distance from a few feet to a few inches.

Example using all three tubes with the 100-400:

I use a 14mm tube with my 80-200 nikon 2.8

Works fine.

I was thinking of getting a kenko one too, I have been told elsewhere that using zoom lenses isnt a good idea with extension tubes and that using a close up lens is a better idea?

Actually, since the extension tubes contain no glass, the quality is not deteriorated. With a close-up filter, being more glass added to the front of the lens, quality will be slightly worse than without it.

What you may lose with the extension tubes is the ability to auto-focus. However, for close-up work you generally use manual focus anyway.
