I'm curious as to how I should handle photos I am skeptical about? I've been voting for the "On the Edge" submissions and I've come across at least few that I feel had to have post-camera editing (beyond what I understand to be allowed).

I dont want to vote low if they had a very creative way of aquiring the shot but is there a way to ask the person to explain?

And I was under the impression that multi-composition and colorizing only parts of a photo was not allowed... is this true?

There are ways to colorize parts that are not illegal. Just vote every shot as if it is legal. If you really doubt it then you can ask them to tell you how to do it. You might learn something. You can also ask for a DQ, but still vote as if it IS legal.

Give them the score you think they deserve anyway and submit a Disqualification request for the image (link at the bottom of the page containing the image(s) in question).

Don't be shy. That's what its there for.

If you're uncertain as to the legality of the image, click on the "Recommend this photograph for disqualification." link below the image and put in the box why you think the photo has broken the rules. The site council will take things from there. Once you've submitted this request, vote as though the photo was legal! :o)

For more information about the DQ system, read my quick guide.

Forgive my stupidity but how do you only colorize parts of a photos? According to the following rule dont you have to apply any editing to the entire image?

"Post-shot Adjustments may be made to your image in a photo editing program, so long as the modification is applied to the whole image. This includes levels, b&w conversion, hue/saturation, sizing/rotating, curves and cropping (or their non-Photoshop equivalents)."

I'm curious to know how someone might have got color on a black and white image without breaking the aforementioned rule?

The colour & b&w effect can be produced by desaturating only specific colours - eg if the red and green channels were both desaturated and blue not, only the blue objects would appear to be in colour, the rest would be in b&w. Since this affects the entire image, this is within the rules.

Do a channels conversion then add a selective desaturation layer to remove all colors except one. Both adjustments are global, though will only work well with certain types of photo where colors are clearly defined.

Thanks for the replies. I still think the photo in question is not allowed but I will wait and see what happens.

I stopped doing it since I got low scores. Try this thread to start. It will lead you to other threads in which I kind of explain what is legal and what it's.

The thing that this process have given to me is people selecting it as favorites. So that's cool.

Yup, I did it once and it didn't go over well either.

Now people really hate my "Edge" entry, or they think what I did was illegal, or don't understand how it fits the challenge. It started out at 7.0 and is at 5.1 now. Bah Humbug, I say! Oh well, I like it and don't care what the voters think, cause they're always wrong anyways. Hehe. :-)
