I guess I am about to show my age. With the models being so young, it was almost out of place to have them wearing the clothes and using the background settings they were using. I am not sure how to explain what I am thinking here. But it seems to me that if I saw these girls wearing those clothes, I would expect them to be going to prom and having fun. The pictures, poses, and outfits made them look like they were dressing older than they should be. I would have wanted to see the younger models having more fun, instead of looking serious and pretending to be older than they are. Just my take and I am sure to be alone in my thoughts.

Do you know yet what kind of work you might be doing for the publication?

Sweet gig! Nothing like shooting hotties! :-D

ETA: Right click on the link and "save target as" it's much faster.

"save as"
worked well
some of the photos I thought were too dark hiding some of the dresses

seems like alot of the pictures could have been edited better.

I liked some of the poses

of course I can't say I ever even seen a fashion mag anyways

but it did have a sears catalog feel to it...

Reactions:
- The layout is very boxy and square. Simple is good, but this layout and these fonts don't seem very professional. The work comes across as pretty unpolished.
- The photography is not the best - colors are weird in some, girls are too close to the backgrounds in some. Some poses are awkward and there's that one picture where it looks like the model is going "huh?!" that's not at all flattering.
- The concept of the gardens and the more opulent interior is nice, but I feel that the gardens should be more in the background and that the focus should be more on the dresses. I think incorporating the barn/rural setting with the formal dresses is too much of a stretch for the capabilities of the photographers and designers at their current level.

Just my opinions! HTH :)

Skip, if you do work for them, you're going to raise the bar big time! Just make sure they don't combine your work with whomever is doing it now, LOL.
- The lighting is just awful on many of the shots. Multiple hard shadows, poor color balance, deep shadows in the wrong areas... you name it
- While a few of the poses are good, others mad me say "um...no."
- I didn't get past page 14.

They will definitely move UP if you shoot for them.

Now you need to recommend a good layout designer too - or just have them pick up a Vogue and copy.

I hope you get it - it's great fun shooting with models.

I totally agree with Fritz here. If you are going to submit some pics and they are going to do the editing just run run very fast away ;)

On the other hand you have a lot to give to this people and you could make them look more professional. They just need some polishing ;D

agreed, there's an awful lot of mediocre in those pictures. Not horrid, just not that good.

Also, not very creative at all. Depending on the image they want to preset.

Colorcarnival is right, for these pictures either the models should be older looking, or the surroundings younger looking. If they're going for classic or womens fashion, they should get a classic beauty, not some girls they picked up at the mall. Course, you take what you can get and when you can get it I suppose...

thanks to everyone for their feedback on this! those are really some great observations. i hope to find some way to use them in order to sell them on the differences between what they're doing and what i might be able to do for them.

at the very least, i think i want to approach michael taylor, the designer responsible for all the clothes.

the main thing that bugs me is that the online version doesn't credit a photographer. for me, it's not the lack of credit, but my need to know who my competition is. was this stuff shot for free by an art student? or was it a friend of mine? without the credit, i don't know--and i don't want to step on any toes...

thanks again!

Just an observation but I always find that reducing photographs to a pdf file seems to affect the quality of the image and I don't think this helped.

For sure, the layout was not avant garde and some of the photos were a little technically deficient but I have to say a lot of what the clothes were trying to say came across.

What it said, though, was more about the style of teenagers than the what was probably an haute couture intent. It did come across as "big girl clothes" modelled by "young girl models".

Sorry.

I think the lighting in most of them is pretty uneven - For fashion especially it should be pretty perfect. Lots of shadows and uneven lighting going on in the faces etc. Also looks a bit harsh in some of the pics. Lots of shadows under the eyes - Look at the last pic. Pretty bad but they use the pics nice and big which is a bonus.

I have to agree lighting sucked in many of these shots, but I disagree about the age of the models....and the classic look, many younger women go for this style of dress these days and I felt like that was a non-issue, but maybe I'm wrong...wouldn't be the first time...lol.

The photography is not so hot and the layout is horrible ... you're definitely better than them.

Every time I tried to look past page one I would get an error advising me that Adobe needed to close.

If page one of these images is any indication of the remainder of the photographs I would strongly recommend you help the originator with the lighting.

I truly wish I could see the remainder of the product but since I can't I will limit my comments to the lighting.

I liked the pictures but not all of them. Who wears a dress while walking with a horse? Or riding a big tricycle? I don't know? The models had some weird expressions as well, I thought.

I don't know about you, but that garden location is ghastly. Seems a pity to have such pretty flowers in such unsubtle settings. But then again, that type of photography is more about the set up, the location, the dressing, the makeup, and lighting than it is about shutter, ap, and clicking. I imagine you will need a team to do that sort of thing. Good luck.

Opening it in the browser wasn't working too well for me. Try right clicking and selecting "Save Target As..."

My favorite shot was the first pic and p4 Pic#1. The lighting seems more equal on the models' faces. What first struck me was the typography. The way the text was integrated into the spreads and the fonts used. Didn't like that all that much. Some of the group pics, some of the models have their faces in the shadows. Overall I think they have a lot of room for improvement. With some experienced help, such as yourself's , they should certainly get better.

Click around this site and I think you will be able to locate the shutterbug who is responsible.

*bleagh* they're a stylistic mess. Nothing goes together.
