I bought a cheapo Dynatran on Ebay â€Â¦ these are a dime-a-dozen on Ebay. It's too heavy and seems to fall apart more each time I use it. I'd like something with legs that are not attached to eachother and something not too heavy. Ansd, of course, a total cost UNDER $125. Anyone?

If you after legs and a head, some of Slik's lower models are quite good for around that price. For example, a 330DX with a Manfrotto 486RC should cost just over $100.

Definitely need both head and legs - a head I can use on my Gorillapod too.
I was just looking on B+H and saw that some Benbo tripods have what seems like a cool feature â€Â¦
"One large lever locks and unlocks the legs for quick setup and takedown."

Benbo Trekker 2

I realize this has no head but the lever thing sounds nifty â€Â¦ is this feature common??? (sorry I'm tri-pod naive)

Hey, another Gorillapod user! :)

I have a Sunpak tripod - they're for sale at Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. for much less than $125 (mine was $40). My science entry was taken with the D200 mounted on it, and it worked fine.

It has a 3-way pant/tilt head, comes with a handle, weighs very litte, and shrinks to pretty small. It also has a bracket that lets you flip the camera for portrait oriented shots.

I have the Slik Pro 4000DX, it is a great tripod. Not too heavy, but very stable, plus legs can be adjusted individually. Centre column is split, so you can mount camera under tripod close to ground.

Do you mean 400DX?? I couldn't find a 4000DX.

I have a manfrotto 728B tripod (goes for $120ish) that I love. It folds up nice and small and is pretty sturdy for how much it costs. The only thing is that it does NOT have a removable head, it's built into the legs. Not a big deal for me, but just some food for thought.

does that mean your ribbons were mostly handheld or gorilla-held?

I've used the Bogen Junior for many, many years and am completely satisfied. I don't remember what I paid for it, but was pleasantly surprised to see that it's still sold. A shade over your budget, but it's rock solid. I've used it to hold my 80mm spotting scope with camera attached. Nice value in a tripod.

I'd like a head that I could remove and use on my gorillapod. This is one of those decisions where I just can't seal the deal. I need something tall to complement mr. gorilla.
