My price range is about $500-$1000 US (willing to go a bit higher if needed).

Basically I'm looking but I'm not very well versed on camera hardware, so given that this will be a rather large expenditure for me I want to get as much advice as I can on this.

Any info on lenses would also be very helpful.

B&H prices:

Pentax K100D, 380 (after rebate)
Pentax DA 18-55 3.5-5.6, 110
Pentax DA 50-200 4-5.6, 180 (after rebate)
Pentax DA 50 1.4, 200 (after rebate)
2gb SD card, ~80
Bag, ~40

Total = 990

Damn good kit, if you ask me... sub a K10D in there and add 400.
