im surprised that no one has mentioned the sigma 105mm 2.8 macro. absolutely lovely lens, it stays on my camera about 80% of the time, great for macro (obviously), great for portraits, and other things, plus i got mine for like $270 on ebay, so all around its a great choice.

Then there's Nikon AF-S Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 VR, which is the Nikon equivalent I guess. I love that lens.

Nikon 85 f/1.8
Nikon 35-70 f/2.8

Must haves.

If I had to choose only one lens, my first choice would be Nikkor 17-55 f/2.8.
It worth every penny, IMO.

If anyone is still looking for a 18-200 VR I found 3 of them in stock at 2 seperate Milwaukee Area Stores tonight. Price at one was 729 + Tax other was 769+ tax. I am pretty sure both stores would be willing to take order by phone and ship. If anyone would like more details PM me.
