When you say "getting enough light in" I take it that you are as slow as you can reasonably go with shutter-speed, and are at max. aperture (f/5.6) and are still underexposed?
If so, are you using ISO 100? You can easily use up to ISO 400, though you may begin to see a little noise in shadows. ISO 800 is useable for many shots.
If you are still lacking for light, there is only one answer... faster glass.

you dont give enough info to help you

are you at max aper already? if not, open it up! if it's at max, try raising your iso.

are you shooting still subjects or moving? if it's still just use a tripod, then it doesn't matter how long the shutter speed is.

you can also point lamps at what you wanna shoot!

we need more info about the gear and the subject to help you.

what are you trying to shoot?

okay, okay already. yes i'm at 5.6, yes ISO 100, yes i've left the shutter open. i've just found that when trying macro shots, i can't get enough light. and yes, i'm pointing lights at the subject.
my apartment provides terrible lighting and i'm trying everyway to compensate with little luck.

One thing that helps me, is not having too much 'overhead' light, more just focused light on the subject and perhaps from the side a bit may help.
