Hi there,

Firstly, thanks for taking the time to possibly answer/help me with my conundrum:

Next year i'm going travelling for potentially longer than 7 months on a worldwide mission with my wife. We're not using many hotels/hostels etc as most of it will be done with a tent, my backpack and my balls. Of course, I am taking along my camera, some mem cards and some batteries... this is all good, but I have a 60gb external hard drive I use for work sometimes and was wondering if this would work to put my pictures onto when I run out of space? I have a canon 400d but I'm not sure if it will be possible as the drivers for the software would need to be installed.

Any ideas? Is it possible to transfer files straight from camera to hard-drive or do I need something else to do this? I can't take my laptop for reasons of power conversion, weight and the fact that a shiny laptop in a warzone may bring unwanted attention to me, or worse, my wife.

Again, thanks for looking.

I'm not aware of any interface to a hard disk that doesn't have a computer in the loop. There are some portable solutions though. Search the forums for people looking to use a card reader interface to dump directly to an iPod. Those threads generated lots of alternatives.

Maybe plug in at an internet cafe whenever you can to make your transfers?

There are devices that allow you to transfer straight from memory card to hard drive, but as usual, they aren't cheap. As far as using your external, you'd need a computer somewhere in the loop for it. Although you wouldn't need extra software if you have a card reader. iPod interfaces aren't very practical because transferring images will suck the battery dry in minutes which isn't even enough time to dump an entire card.

I love my Epson P-2000. It is a battery powered 40G hard drive with a large LCD screen and built-in CF and SD card readers. Prices have come down a bit since the introduction of the newer models with the larger hard drives.

I use mine all the time, at weddings, at sporting events, on vacations. It's a great way to store your images while still "on the road" and nowhere near a computer. Plus the large LCD screen lets you review the images. It even reads and displays raw images.

100GB 2.5" with an external enclosure shouldn't set you back too much.. it gets its power through the USB port so should help with traveling and different countries power supplies..

Fantastic. Thanks a lot for your help. At least now I have things to pursue.

ditto. I bought it when I went on a 3 weeks road trip with my wife 2 years ago. You can upload and see real time your photos (incl raw) on the very good quality screen. And they've now upgraded it to P 3000, 5000...

btw the 2000 was also supposed to read music and film. Can be useful, but never used it.

The other thing you want to consider for a trip like this is how to charge your batteries (both for the camera and the hard-disk). If you are going to spend a lot of time away from any power supplies (i.e. trekking) then you might want to get (or build) a solar charger. Or make a habit of asking if you can plug in anytime you find a place.
