Hi.

I was recently hired by a local coffee shop to completely revamp their menus. The exact services that I am doing are as follows:

- A photoshoot where I take photos of several sandwiches and smoothies
- Edit the photos
- Create a design to put on placards in front of the coffee they sell by the pound and print out the 5 cards on 4x6 paper
- Create a design for two separate menus to be printed 20x30. One for sandwiches and one for smoothies. I will incorporate images from the photoshoot on the menus.
- Make two 8x11 reduced size versions of the above menus.

Since the real crux of the job here is the graphic design part, I am not sure exactly how to charge. The manager who I have become friendly with is asking me what I want to charge him. I already told him that he will pay separately for the printing of the 20x30 which I cannot do at home. But I am not sure what to charge for my design/photography services. Any insight?

Thanks for your help,
Lee

Lee-Is it the first time you are doing this type of job (or parts of it)?

Will it bring you more work? Is it a resume builder?

How many weeks work or hours will be involved, with all the back and forth included?

The print shop I work at charges $60/hour for graphic design work; freelancers in this area probably charge anywhere from $30-100/hour.

The more experience you have in graohic design, the higher the rate you can charge, since you should get the job done in less time. It will also make a big difference if you have professional layout software (Quark, InDesign) -- this is not a job you want to do in Photoshop.

If you are new at graphic design work, it may make more sense for you both to agree on a flat fee for the whole job, regardless of how long it takes (not counting changes the client makes after you have an agreed-upon design).

$1300, in the bag out the door I never see ya again. Yeah... Nice good number... (I don't know how many images have to be taken or what so Just throwing a gut of what I would charge.)

I have done menu design, three page text, with one image and one illustration for $350. But that only took me half a day to make. 6-; This sounds like it may be a few days to shoot and design.

Yeah this is my first time doing a job like this.

I'm not 100% sure how long it will take since I've never necessarily done a menu design before. And GeneralE: right now I am working in photoshop as it is all I have to use. The "menus" are really just big posters for the wall of the shop.

I will end up taking about 200-400 photos and then using probably 8 in the actual design. I'm not sure if I should just charge flat for the job or for hours. As GeneralE said, I am inclined just to charge a flat rate, especially since this is really the first time I am doing this as a paid job.

Any more suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated.

When a project is very defined - like this one is - I prefer to work at a overall budget.

I'd guess like this:

Photos - 8@$200 each
Design - 16 hours@$75
Adjustments (after client feedback) 4 hours
Print costs (?)

So I'd start talking to them and ask what they have budgeted - and see how close they are to the $3,600 I have ballparked. Realizing that any photo shoot is worth it in my book cause it beats just the designing - and anything more than couple of days of work is worth a discount in my book. I'd then work out a price that is just a little more than they wanted to spend. :-)

If a client has no idea what they want, or they say "I just want something cool" it's straight hourly for them!

Also I'd ask them to show me some design they like - in general I can come up with 8 - 10 cool designs that aren't even close to what they are thinking - so any kind of visual clues they can give speeds up my design time enormously.

Also - if they have the budget - I'd seriously look for a food stylist to come in for the shoot - and invite one of the client team to be there too. Client buy off as you shoot, and someone to worry about the food looking "right" really cuts down on what you have to process and you can focus more on your photography.

Teams rule in the creative world.

Any local video production company or photographer should be able to give you names of stylists.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

I kinda like that $1300 number. I'm guessing that they don't have a huge budget? If I'm right, then that's a big factor. Sounds like a One Man Show deal...

Since you don't know how long the job will take you can't charge by the hour but $1300 is a fair number for a fat week of work, especially since it's your first go at it.

I think the experience is worth more than the money this time around and if you do a great job more work will come of it.

There's a lot to chew on and a lot to learn...food photography, design....impending printing nightmares. Money's cool but keep things in balance.

Yeah I agree. I don't want to sell myself short, but I want to be fair.
