OK, this is only my second challenge entry but I find myself second guessing things alot. Would I've done any better entering the second photo as opposed to the one I entered? I thought it may have been to busy and I knew the one I entered was poor (quality wise) but liked the image better.... Any thoughts?
Entered got a 4.25
Second choice?

Thanks!

I think the one that you entered was the right choice. I like it alot better than the second shot. The second shot is a little busy. The first shot is of better photo quality to me.

Not an expert but just replying.

Hi Jennifer, welcome to DPC.

As a few people mentioned in the comments for your Water submission, the composition was well done, and generally it had a lot going for it. Being night you were really up against it, which meant the shot is a little on the blurry side (just a bit). As well as that, the water was moving, meaning it would be much harder to get crisp focus. (The darker it is, the longer the shutter has to stay open, meaning the water moves a little whilst the photo is being taken.) Colour/contrast wise I quite like it, you seem to have made a good job editing.

Looking at the thumbnail for your second shot it looks like it could be something pretty special. Unfortunately it's a little heavily edited for DPC. You seem to have used a smoothing (?) filter, which has reduced the detail on the water and the buildings in the background. Less use of filter would probably have resulted in an improved image, somewhat at the cost of noise. Composition, colour and contrast wise, I think it's pretty good. I'd be interested to see the original from your second image.

Hope you enjoy your time here.

EDIT:

You might like to look at www.neatimage.com, which has some software that reduces noise in photos. (And there's a freeware version!)

Also, I really like your first submission, Simple Love.

Thanks guys... I should've known, "go with the gut". I took these shots not intending to use them for a challenge but then realized when looking at them that they might be interesting if I could get one of them to work. And due to the darkness and the quickness in which they were taken (It was freezing!!) there were obviously some problems.

The second was PS'd quite a bit which is another reason I didn't submit it. So there you go. I'll try and post the original of the second when I get to my other computer. I've heard alot about "Neatimage" while browsing here but don't know much about so I'll definetly be checking out that link. Any help I can get! :)

And thanks for the compliments on Simplicity! :) I was pleased with my placement for a first timer!

I would like the second one better IF it wasn't so overprocessed in Photoshop.
