I was reading dpreview and I saw the thumbnail of this thing, with the word DSLR over it, and I was starting to get so excited... then I read the part about how they're not putting it into production. It was like a stab in the gut :(

That's how a DSLR should look. If they released this thing as a special edition K10D with a 50% price increase, I would buy one as soon as I could.
I hope so much they put it into production, or something like it. I've wanted a simple DSLR with classic styling and no built in flash for so long...

Yup yup, if you do a quick search u can find about 20 photos of it, and a couple more in its case. It will be displayed in Japan at Pentax Square until July.
And its not looks, it features a full frame pentaprism so the flash was necessarily removed even though the exact shape is of course a choice.

From the other pictures, it looks like the rest is just a K10D. Not that it's a bad camera, but for the anniversary one it would be nice if they could just have an M, Av and Tv mode, and cut back on the buttons in back.
People like styling like that... for props in movies and catalogs and (non photography) magazine covers, they don't use some new DSLR with millions of buttons and knobs and stuff hanging off it, they grab an old chrome rangefinder or SLR. I think it would be worth their trouble to release it, I bet it would outsell the K10D even though it hits a different market. |

For the most part yeah dont forget the round IR sensor in the front. Interesting choice in change.

Perhaps theyre feeling out the market for a future release of a similar model, not based on the K10D? Like a minimalist, K1000 style DSLR? I dont know bout the chrome, but a really small dslr would be the perfect match for the Pentax Limited lenses...
who knows, theres supposed to be two new pentax dslrs this fall... i would love to scoop up an ultracompact slr and a DA 40 Limited pancake!
Hoya has stated that, under their helm, Pentax wont challenge the big boys, but will rather continue to focus on cameras with unique feature sets. In that case, a serious pro model may be off the radar, but Pentax has a serious advantage over everyone else when it comes to lens size. I think it would be silly to not exploit that advantage...

Gold cameras are so tacky...
That would be great if they focus on filling niches, there are plenty to be filled. If they do it right they'll convert a bunch of film shooters who don't like the current offerings at all.
I agree, something like that camera would be perfect with a 31mm 1.8 LTD. |

I thought it was just the alligator skin covering on the body and lens!
