I see GeneralE has been posting stuff recently... so I assume he's not floating around in the ocean after the earthquake in California a bit ago...? |

I live in Salinas, not far from San Simeon. I almost fell down! It was a rolling type of quake, x-mas tree ornaments shaking and swaying along with blinds and light fixtures. Pretty scarey, gets the heart a pumpin'.
Luckily Ca. has many good qualities to counterbalance :) |

Sounds rather wild -- I hope you didn't have any damage! I was awakened by an earthquake in New York City (of all places) last year. I thought a train was going by my hotel -- I was amazed to hear it was an earthquake! |

I didn't even feel it here, although some in the area have. It's about 150 miles south of here. The town of Paso Robles has suffered the worst damage, with first reports indicating many historic brick buildings downtown have collapsed or are in peril. Magnitude 6.5, depth 5 miles, epicenter about 7 miles NE of San Simeon (Hearst Castle). So far, no reports of problems at either the Diablo Canyon nuclear plant or the large conventional power plant at Morro Bay. CBS Radio is carrying updates every 30 minutes or so ... |

Besides, Oakland is on the North American plate; it is San Francisco and Los Angeles on the the Pacific Plate side of the San Andreas fault which will slide northwards (but not "into the ocean" -- if anything they will subduct under the NA Plate and be remelted into magma around Spokane, Washington). |
