Its nice but I like to tinker, so i'd prefer to buy multiple hard drives and build a RAID storage system in a PC.

I've seen this too and wish I had it for my family back home, they have two laptops and a desktop that were once networked together but somehow has since gotten disconnected. So now each computer has things on it that would be so much more convienent on a central one. I may still consider it for when I get back home.

That is how we are. We have 2 laptops and 2 desktops. I am always emailing myself files...LOL. My husband used to have it set up throught the router where we could access the other computers. Not sure why he didn't set it up like that this time around.

I am definitely interested in the automatic backups. That would be nice.

What's the price? I have a Western Digital device which I believe is similar. It provides 1 TB of network-attached storage for about $500.

It is about $400 for the 500gb model.

Hate to cross-post, but here is a much more economical option that I just posted in another thread:

I just picked up a SimpleTech 500GB network-accessible storage drive for $160 -- basically you plug it into your router and it becomes available as a network share drive to any/all computers on your home network (just mounts as another drive letter). The price at ClubIT is the best you'll find on this unit or any other 500GB NAS drive, and I read somewhere that this unit uses Seagate drives, but no confirmation of that in the product description.
