Can anyone tell me what these things in this picture are? This is a photo of the base of a Hibiscus I planted last month. The 'stringy' parts are the roots that were on the surface. The soil around the center is pressed down because I can't keep my cat out of it. During one of his visits to the plant he uncovered these... I'm not savvy on plants - is this something used to aerate the soil, or might these be eggs (i.e. insects) of some kind.. They're not stones - I punctured one with a pen tip.
Thanks for any help.

Thanks, but I'm serious - if they're insect eggs that plant is getting trashed tonight...

They are shaped a bit oddly to be insect eggs.. What exactly did it look like when you punctured one of them? |

It didn't look much different, just had a hole in it. I didn't see anything drip out.

they could be a fertilizer.. there are a few different types of fertilizers that come in some form of a ballish shape and eventually just leave an empty or water filled shell behind.. you should ask the place where you bought it from if they use such a thing.. |

I have no idea what that is but I know exactly what I would do with it. TRASH! I wouldn't leave that anywhere in the house.

Thanks, I used an SB-800 bounced off the ceiling. Used my 70-200 b/c it was on the camera and I was too lazy to change it, but I stopped down to f/8 hoping to get more DOF. Oh well.

Hmm.. If nothing oozed out, maybe they aren't insect eggs.. You could always dissect one completely and look for embryo?
It'll get you into the spirit of Science incase you didn't submit.

Well, I should retract that statement, I squished one and it squirted right at me. I'm tired, going to bed. The plants history = (

Ohh.. Perhaps it is something that shouldn't be in your house.
Well, we'll all remember your plant fondly in some way..
Check your other plants and make sure that stuff isn't in there too.. |

Awwwh.. That's really too bad.. You can always get another one somewhere.. Maybe you could just spray yours down with some sort of pesticide and put it somewhere where your cat won't get into it (so he doesn't chew on it and get sick) and maybe the bugs will go away?
I don't know. I'm sorry about your insect invasion anyways, Maverick.. |

If I had my choice I would stick to fake plants..I kill any living plant given to me. I can't even have fake plants though b/c my cat destroys everything.

This one was actually doing really well. Between my cat and I we managed to kill some Gerber daisies, but the rest of my plants have been ok.

I don't think there is any need to trash it, thats a little harsh. It looks like a beautiful plant. just put it outside and see what happens. if it is an empty shell it's most likely fertilizer and if one has stuff in it it may just not be an empty shell of fertilizer yet.
give the plant a chance...
