I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for the great input. So I just ordered the 50mm 1.8, but the softbox seems just a little over the top for me. :-) She is being induced this coming Wednesday, so I hope to get some time to practice with it. Please keep the ideas coming, I really appreciate it!!!

If anyone's interested, here is a photo I took 27 years ago (!) when our first child was born.

And the first moments after birth give great photos. This one is me - absolutely exhausted, holding my minutes old son, while my daughter (she's 2 years old) looks at him for the first time.

Thank-you to everyone who offered suggestions and advise. Mom and Dad are both thrilled with how everything turned out. I was sooo nervous getting ready for this, but I really got a lot of great shots thanks to everyone's tips.

Now, may I introduce Gavin James Davis!
Born June 5th at exactly 3PM.
7lbs 11oz.
20 Inches long.

Congratulations to Mom and Dad and baby Gavin, and to you too! It's about time someone posted some good news around here. I'm so glad it worked out well.
