So I'm expecting a birthday check in the not too distant future... And I'm thinking I get to buy a new lens.

Choices:

Pentax 50-200/4.0-5.6 ED; about $250, for pics of birds, sailboats, and street photography.

Pentax 50/1.4; about $200, for portraits, flowers, and concerts/indoor/low light.

Pentax 10-17/3.5-4.5; about $300 after rebate, for pictures of fishes eyes. Fun, but probably less broadly useful than the others.

Other thoughts would be to get something with macro capability.

Opinions? Competing ideas?

50mm f:1.4

a 50-200 for under $300 is going to disappooint i would guess ( it's also slow ).

Geez, guys, can you try to come to some sort of consensus?

Seriously - the 50mm is a must and in f/1.4 flavor adds a whole new spectrum for low-light photography as well as creativity with depth of field.
<--view is actual pixel crop of larger image

<--at minimum focusing distance, wide open at f/1.4

<--camera in same place, same point of focus, at f/8.0

<--depth of field is very narrow at minimal distances, but fun to get creative with.

The 50/1.4 is one of the few lenses out there that with repeated use WILL actually make you a better photographer.
