I was thinking about entering a couple photos in the Colorado State Fair. Anybody had any dealings with entering things in the fairs? If so what type of photos do you recommend?

Have you been to your state fair in the last few years? What types of photos did you see?

I haven't been to the CO ones, but I've entered in the NM state fair a few times. Actually, last year I got best of show and judge's choice on one shot... There wasn't any really great stuff in the youth division though.

It's probably worth it, doesn't cost much since they usually don't want framed shots. And you get a lot of people to see your photos, and might get some prize money.

The last state fair I went to was in 92, and I remember that some 80's band was playing.

I went last year and you'll be happy to hear that same band was playing.

This will be my third year entering the San Diego County Fair. I find a great way to see how you stack up against others and get to see what others like and do. They judges will be different from the ones here at DPC.

They are usually juried- meaning you deliver or send in your pictures and they decide what if any are good enough to hang. My first year they only took two out of six (I can enter up to ten). Last year it was four of seven- received two honorable mention ribbons that time. Just checked you entertainment list- the names of musical performers I recognize are Peter Frampton, Ted Nugent and the Doobie Brothers. Fairs can be a great place to take photos at too. Go for it!

I had to print and mat my prints- black or white mats- but no frames or glass. Check their category list (we have about fifteen!) and your best pictures that fit into one. Sometimes you can help your odds by picking a less- entered category like black and white architecture instead of the pictures of pets category. They have those to try to attract more entries and viewers.

Awesome tips. I think I am going for it. I hope they let something in.
