when I use flash (both my softbox and umbrella) with my 5d the lower half of the images become totally black :(
yes, i have checked, nothing is stuck on that side on the lens.
nothing is in front of the lens.
i don't see anything that can cause this!!
when i take out the flash cabel and shoot without flashes everything is fine.
i feel (or just hope) there must be some easy and funny explanation of this, but i am so very worried for my cam
help me please!!
:)

What shutter speed are you using when this happens? Is if faster than 1/200?

1/500

That's your problem, you've exceeded the sync speed of the camera. On a SLR the shutter does not open all at once, so if you use too fast a speed the flash will catch the shutter half open. Try using 1/200.

Aha! Flash sync speed of 5D is 1/200, so make sure your shutter speed is below 1/200 to avoid this. Problem solved. Note that with some studio flashes with long durations, you might have to reduce shutter speed a little more to get totally rid of the black band.

Edit: boy, waaay to slow, LOL!

On the new 1D Mark III Canon has bumped up the sync speed to 1/300 :)

Note that if you use a 550EX or 580EX as fill flash on Aperture priority mode you can go to higher sync speeds by switching the Flash unit to High Sync mode...

Whew! Glad that was an easy fix, Svetlana!

Oddly enough the original 1D that I had had a 1/500th flash sync. Lets go back to that. :-)

When I'm using my strobes I actually have to limit my shutter speed to 1/160th to avoid a slight darkening on one side of the image. I have some older strobes where 1/200th was fine. But I think the speed of these strobes is slower.

On my 5D it's impossible to go above the sync speed (1/200) when I'm shooting flash. I wonder how how you were able to get to 1/500? I try setting my camera to 1/250 and right when I press the shutter half-way, it goes to 1/200.

If your using a hotshoe flash just put it into High speed sync mode and you can shoot as fast as you want, you just wont get the full effect of the flash. This assuming that the 5D will allow this like all the other canons I have seen.

That's true if the camera knows about the flash, as it will if you have a flash mounted to the hot shoe. If, however, you're using the PC synch socket, the camera will just send the trigger signal.

i only use that pc socket, a wire:) so i can go much faster than 1/500
