I have the week off an am thinking about taking a short trip (3 days, 2 nights) somewhere within a reasonable distance. I'm near Ithaca, NY. I have a couple ideas, but where do you think I should head and why? Preferably not someplace really hot or really crowded.

Thanks!

Hey, Jen. How about the Adirondacks? Lake Placid in great this time of year, though I guess it might be a little busy with the holiday.

Don't they have huge crocodiles there? :)

Hah! Wasn't that a Bill Pulman movie (the President from Independence Day among other thing)? Little known fact - he's from Ithaca, NY. It all comes full circle. ;)

I would head up tp the Rochester/Buffalo area. Plenty to keep you busy for a few day. I miss living there!

My favorite place would be Letchworth State Park called the Grand Canyon of the East.

I would also go to Genesee Country Museum

and you might take a drive to Niagara Falls, its only 3 hours from Rochester.

Thanks for the ideas!

Gary - I was actually think about Lake Placid. I've never been before.

Barbara - Thanks for those. Letchworth is definitely someplace I need to visit and Mumford has been in the back of my mind too. They are close by (within 2 hours) and an easy day trip. I'd hate to pay for a hotel for something so close.

So...how about other places 3+ hours away?

By the way, do you need a passport to enter Canada now? I had one that expired a few months ago. I was thinking about heading up into Canada...maybe near Ottawa or that area.

No passport required if you drive, at least not at this point. You should be fine with a Drivers License and birth certificate. Next year is when the full passport thing is supposed to go into effect, but I'll believe it when I see it.

As for crowded, a few years back I went up to the falls on July 5th and caught sunrise. It was close to empty! I was there so early that the lots we not even attended. waited about an hour for it to get bright enough to shoot. I crossed in Niagra rather than at the Peace Bridge and drove south though the park.

That was my first and only trip to Canada, and I've lived here for 6 years now.

I just took a look at your profile and thought of one place that is farther away and would fall in line with your interests. Have you ever been to Mystic Seaport in CT? It is about a 7 hour drive from where you are. It would bee far enough away that you would want to stay in the area while you do your shooting.

I see you made it up to Sodus last fall, Another Great Lakes Lighthouse is in Charlotte, about an hour west. The light house was decommissioned, but the local community has turned it into a museum. It is open for tours, though I'm not sure of the schedule. I do know you can walk up its inside stairs and shoot from the walk around the light area.

Just some food for thought.

Given that Jen's OP was back in May, I'm guessing her week off is over ;)

So, where did you go and how was the trip???
