I'm fed up of free web gallery hosting sites. The latest one I'm using (instantlogic) distorts the images to the point where they just look crappy. So...
I'm attempting to create a simple website to host galleries of pics that I've taken. I'm relatively new to website design, and want to have a simple way of creating it. Nothing complex.
Can somebody reccommend a good software to create simple websites.

after getting domain and hosting...you can use lots of different programs for the site... I use thumbsplus for photos...it creates a thumbnail of the photo and when clicked, opens to full size version. I also use Frontpage for html editing. |

I signed up with 1 and 1. I've managed to get a simple PS created gallery up and running. But now I'm stumped. How do I get it to have multiple galleries on the site. And a front page to direct people to the different galleries?
Maybe I need a course in basic WebSite programming. Is there any good info on-line?

Hi Mario!
My website is not as polished as most on this site, but I'll be working on it again soon - but the point is, I use a software which was cheap but easy to manage for setting up a gallery of photos called "myGallerymaker". Here's one of my own gallery pages Surfing contest and here's the location for the software. You can download it free to try (which is what I did - after checking out several others) at mybytes
The software is pretty user friendly as is, and with a little more skill it's extremely customizeable (you can create your own backgrounds, standard text for the pages, etc.)
At any rate, I had tried quite a few different ones that were available for a "test drive" online, but this is the only one that I felt really worked well. |

There are many good free web site providers, you can check em out at 100 Best best free webspace providers. - These guys give user reviews of the providers aswell.
Its a good pace to start.
But one problem with free internet space is that u get it bundled with annoying pop-ups or banners at the top of your web page which kill the look of the site.
I myself use a free webspace provider called United Net.
They give totally free web space - and there arnt any pop-ups either.
The only catch is - that you have to put a small image (100 pix * 31 pix) as a link back to their main site. this should only be on your main page. which is no biggy coz - it small and doesnt take up much space.
These are their features:-
No setup fees, No monthly fees
15Mb of UNIX Free Web Space
Free Subdomain Name
24/7 Free FTP Access
Free SSI Support
Free Unlimited Email forwarding
Free Colour Statistics
Password protected directories
Custom error 404 pages
Full support for .htaccess
Free Domain is now available. More
Password protected directories
No Banners or PopUps, NO Ads at all !!
The only way to upload stuff is through FTP - unlike geocities or angelfire where u can upload stuff like mail attachments.
Actually FTP is faster - and you have to pay to use FTP with other free webspace providers.
You can use - Cofee Cup Direct FTP 5.2 - which is an excellent FTP tool.
I use Dream weaver to make my pages- its very good and u can get plugins for it - which are called extentions. It looks complicated when u open it up but its very easy when u get used to it.
You can also use frontpage , or any other simple html editors.
For the galleries I used - quickie web albums- really easy and lots of functions - u can customise it any way u want.
Go to Download.comand run a search for html editors, web page tools and web album creators - you will find so many.
I hope this helped you.
Cheers. |

You can make a super basic front page with links to your galleries very easily with simple HTML--like my friend's galleries
I'd check out the bookstore (or library even) before I spent big bucks on an HTML course that probably won't teach you any more than you can learn in a $20 book. That, and using "view -> source" in your browser to see how other people do it should be more than enough to help you get started. |

I have a webspace : //s91886113.onlinehome.us/
I've uploaded a page created in Photoshop. Problem is I want more than 1 gallery.
Somebody suggested Gallery. How does this work? Somehow, I can't figure out how this works. Do I have to upload Gallery to my webspace? And it will manage my photos from there?

Mario -
With the software I linked to you can make as many galleries as you like. I linked to only one of my pages. You just download the software to your computer and you control your own galleries. The software creates your index files from the pictures you specify (and you can give them unique names) and then you upload the completed indexes to your site. You may have a bit of a learning curve, but as someone else said, use the "view source" off your browser menu - that's how I taught myself html. |

Use a web gallery creator to create as many galleries as you want.
Then make a main page and add links to the galleries - thast the simplest way. |

I know! I'm just trying to decide what name I want to use. Unsure if I should go with my name, my DPC name, or something else.
