Are you sure? I'd heard that Peter Jackson didn't even film that scene so it doesn't exist at all. Would be great if I'm wrong though. :)

I can't wait for the extended versions either.. I'd highly recommend seeing it in the theaters rather than waiting though. I find the impact is always greater in a theater and this type of movie just calls for that big screen experience.

I nearly tried to get a ticket for the very next showing right after watching it yesterday morning - but I had to work last night and I doubt tickets would've been available anyway.

Simply, its that good. Theater viewing, highly recommended.

I've searched a bit and I am sorry to dissappoint you (and myself), the end with Saruman in the Shire will not be on the DVD. There will be a 7 minute battle between Saruman and Gandalf on it, that's probably the name calling and the throwing of the palamir bit.

The good thing about this is that at least that part of the story can live on in my head the way I first made it up while reading the book. Anyone else here have the habit of reading a book and than it just becomes a movie in your head? You don't really see the text, you don't notice that you flip pages and you certainly don't notice that another hour (or two or three) has passed........ Everyone else in my family reads books slowly word by word (as if they had to read it out loud) and seem unable to create their own fantasy. :(
None of them like SF or fantasy movies either, let alone books. :(

I saw a newspaper article today that said it would be on the extended version of the DVD. I guess we'll all just have to wait and see.

Quite a large group of people were dissapointed that the shire scene wasn't in the movie. There was even a petition sent to Jackson requesting it to be in the theatrical version.

Just saw ROTK this afternoon with hubby and 7 & 9 year old girls - we LOVED it! I finished reading the series aloud about two months ago, so we've been eagerly anticipating the last in the trilogy of movies. My hand goes out to Peter Jackson! While we could see several areas that were shortened considerably from the way it was written, it just had to be or this would have been 8 movies instead of three - and frankly, I think that would have made it bad. As it was, I was moved to tears by the portrayals of the characters by the various actors - as a sometime "thespian" in my pre-child life, I could really see how saying goodby to these characters had to be hard for all those who have spent the last several years in working with them.

Haven't seen any of them. Waiting for them to collect all of them in a special edition trilogy set first.

We were just talking about that - we're planning to do the same. We saw the first one on DVD only (we bought it), 2nd on big screen - but we've decided not to buy anymore 'til we can get the whole set. It was such a treat to me to read the series again, though. Last time I'd read it I was in about 7th grade - probably 30 years ago!

Peter Jackson is hoping to do the prequal "The Hobbit" when he finishes "King Kong".

Imagine a "LOR" challenge. We should all fly out to New Zealand. Or maybe a "Fantasy" challenge.

That's just what I was thinking (read the very first post)! ;-)

With the blackout in San Francisco, I heard at the Sony Metreon theatre a bunch of people watching up to the last 10 minutes of the movie when the power went out. They were given passes so they can techniquely see it twice, but it must have been disappointing.

This would be like the Matrix challenge and leave anyone who didn't see it out. So not fair to have to pay the overpriced fees of the theater or the movie rental for something that isn't your cup of tea just so you can create a photo that works for the challenge. Oh well that would definately be one I would just sit out.

If he does the Hobbit I'll be waiting in line to see that one too. Just got back from my third go at RoTK and I still cried at the end...

Heh.

As an aside, I don't think a 'Lord of the Rings' challenge would leave anyone who didn't see the movies out.. maybe anyone who hadn't read the books, heard anything at all regarding the series, or had no internet access out. I think a lot can be gleaned and picked up about the books/movie (and this applies to the matrix or almost any other movie/subject really) just by all the perifery (is this a word??) media.

I don't consider it a hardship to check a few things out about it online either, which anyone dealing with the site should have access to - a little research never hurt anybody or any photo, regardless of subject.

I would probably sit it out for lack of an original idea myself.. I've read the books and watched the movies so those two things wouldn't necessarily help anyway. :)

Just my thoughts though!

Sorry to disappoint you all, but no, it won't be on the DVD as Peter Jackson never shot the scenes, he said it was the one part of the book he didn't like and felt no need to include it.
I myself as a HUGE Tolkien fan, having read the series a dozen times, found all three movies very poorly edited and produced. Did no one notice that Faramir's [and Eowyn's] story was completely left without an ending in Return of the King? He was being burnt alive, then pushed out of the flames, then he's standing smiling and laughing when Aragorn is crowned? And the actor who played Saruman, I hope he sues, they made him shoot a ton of scenes and then completely CUT HIM OUT - which is ridiculous since he is an intrical part of the epic series as told by Tolkien. I just think it's rotten to force people who want to understand the movies to buy a version with all the loose ends tied up..what did I pay $14 for? To see the cutting room floor version?
A rant, sorry about that.
